Elisabeth Luise von Alvensleben (1846–1872)Leopold Friedrich von Gerlach (1839–1874)um 1867in the family tree

Leopold Friedrich von Gerlach was a Prussian officer; he died at only 35, two years after Elisabeth Luise. Their children included Ehrengard Pauline von Gerlach (1868–1909), who married Adolf von Thadden-Trieglaff in 1888.

One of the oldest and most significant ancient German noble families, documented since 1163 with Wichard von Alvensleben; the secured line of descent begins with Gebhard (1190–1216). Since the 12th century the family held the hereditary stewardship of the Bishopric of Halberstadt and was among the eight castle-holding noble houses of the Altmark. It produced Prussian ministers, diplomats and officers. A second connection: Karin von Gerlach (House of Rohrbeck) married Wilhelm von Alvensleben (see "Von Gerlach in Other Houses").
