Friedrich Magnus von Bassewitz became President of the Potsdam Regional Government (1810–1842) and Upper President of the Province of Brandenburg (1825–1840), honorary citizen of Berlin and Potsdam, and was thus one of the state's highest-ranking administrative officials.
An old noble family of Mecklenburg and Pomerania, ancient nobility with the ancestral seat of Basse near Gnoien. Friedrich Magnus von Bassewitz was among the most significant Prussian administrative officials of the reform era: in 1800 he served as councillor in the War and Domains Chamber of the Electoral Mark, whose president was Adelheid's uncle Carl Friedrich Leopold von Gerlach; as regional president and provincial governor he helped shape the reorganisation of the state after the Napoleonic Wars.
