The couple lived at Trossin. Six sons went to war, two did not return: Heinrich, born at Trossin in 1882, a court trainee and reserve lieutenant in the 2nd Guard Dragoons, fell on 28 August 1914 near St Quentin; Eberhard, born at Trossin in 1888, a reserve lieutenant in the Guard Rifle Battalion, fell on 27 July 1915 on the Narew. Karl, Bernd-Günther, Gerd and Ulrich survived; the daughters were Gisela and Dorothea.
An East Prussian comital family, raised to imperial comital rank in 1710. The branch into which Ulrike von Gerlach married held Trossin in the Prussian province of Saxony.
