Renata was a daughter of Konrad von Gerlach and Klara von Pfuel. Max von Gersdorff was long the pastor of the Lazarus church and latterly cathedral preacher and superintendent at Naumburg on the Saale; he died in 1914. Of the three sons, Romillo, born at Stätterling in 1894, fell on 29 August 1914 as a lieutenant in the 3rd Foot Guards at Colonfay-le-Sourd, a few weeks after his father's death; his brothers Boll and Hans-Gero were also in the field.
