Sophie Elisabeth was a daughter of Lebrecht von Gerlach, councillor of the court of justice at Köslin, and of his wife Lucia am Ende. Her husband served as a lieutenant in the von Grumbkow regiment and as a captain under de la Motte Fouqué. One daughter is documented: Eleonore Henriette Johanna, born 14 April 1744, died 4 November 1805, married to Konrad von der Goltz.
One of the oldest Pomeranian houses. Nicolaus Grope appears in charters between 1290 and 1292, and the family divided early into two lines, one in the principality of Cammin, one near Schlawe. In the eighteenth century it reached Mecklenburg and the Mark and served Sweden as well as Prussia. The arms are canting: on silver stand three black grapen, three-legged cooking pots with handles, two above one. They are shown here as a woodcut from Siebmacher, and nothing is lost by that: silver and black are the only tinctures this coat bears, in the mantling too.
