Karl von Grolman became General of the Infantry, Chief of the Great General Staff and a Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle. Sophie Eleonore, daughter of the Lord Mayor of Berlin, died in 1807 after a short marriage. Karl von Grolman was chief of the general staff from 1815 to 1819; their daughter Louise (1806–1878) married Count Felix von Stosch in 1829.
A Westphalian noble family taking its name from the Grole estate in Wattenscheid, ennobled repeatedly (1741, 1786, 1812) for military and legal service to Prussia. Karl von Grolman was regarded as one of the most significant Prussian general staff officers of the Wars of Liberation; Scharnhorst counted him among his closest collaborators.
