Berndt von Gerlach was a Landrat and member of the Prussian House of Representatives. He was the son of General Leopold von Gerlach and Johanna von Küssow.

The von Kanitz family is among the oldest noble houses of the Margraviate of Meissen and has been settled in Prussia since the 15th century. The branch at Podangen and Mednicken produced officers, diplomats and politicians: Count Hans von Kanitz-Podangen (1841–1913) was an influential German Conservative agrarian politician in the Reichstag, and his son Count Gerhard von Kanitz (1885–1949) served as Reich Minister of Food and Agriculture from 1923 to 1926.
