The connection is preserved in family tradition; names, year and place are not yet documented and will be added once established. An East Frisian chieftain family whose unbroken line of descent begins with Grote Onneken of Sengwarden, born around 1350. In 1496 the imperially immediate lordship of Kniphausen passed to the family, which has borne both names ever since; in 1588 Wilhelm zu Innhausen und Knyphausen was made an imperial baron, followed in 1635 by his sons, among them the Swedish field marshal Dodo zu Innhausen und Knyphausen (1583–1636). The seat of the elder main line is Lütetsburg near Norden.
