The wedding took place at Gut Redel in Pomerania. Johanna's mother Ulrike was born a von Bardeleben, daughter of General Georg Friedrich Christoph von Bardeleben.

An ancient Pomeranian noble family with the ancestral seat of Quitzin, first documented in 1336 with Nicolaus Küssow. Erasmus Ernst Friedrich von Küssow (1692–1757) was raised to imperial comital rank in 1723; with Count Ludwig Julius Erasmus the family died out in the male line in 1824, its inheritance passing through daughters to other families. Leopold von Gerlach, General of the Infantry and Aide-de-camp General to Friedrich Wilhelm IV, was buried beside Johanna at the family estate of Rohrbeck in 1861.
