A daughter of Carl August von Gerlach-Parsow (1883–1945) married into this family. The von Medem came originally from Lower Saxony; in Courland Claus von Medeheym of Göttingen is recorded in 1459. In 1598 Emperor Rudolf II granted them the rank of imperial baron, and in 1862 the baronial title was confirmed for the whole family in Russia. Anna Charlotte Dorothea von Medem (1761–1821) married Peter von Biron, the last Duke of Courland. Out of consideration for their descendants, this entry does not name the couple.
