Klaus von Gerlach was a retired Landrat. A son of the marriage, Achaz von Schwerdtner-Mitzlaff und von Gerlach (1907–1945), bore both names.
An ancient noble family of Hinterpommern, first recorded on 19 June 1389 as "Wissike filius Meslaf". The family is probably of the same stock as the von Zitzewitz — both come from the same region and bear the same arms. The connection belongs to the Rohrbeck branch.
