Klara was born in Potsdam on 22 August 1847. Konrad von Gerlach was a divisional chaplain.

The von Pfuel family is among the oldest noble houses of Brandenburg; by family tradition in the Mark since 926, documented in 1215 in Anhalt (Heinrich von Pfuel) and from 1267 in Brandenburg charters (Heino de Pule, margravial bailiff). Its most famous member is Ernst Heinrich Adolf von Pfuel (1779–1866), General of the Infantry, Governor of Berlin and briefly Prussian minister-president in 1848.
