Martin was a son of Lebrecht von Gerlach and Lucia am Ende. No date is yet known for his wife; the connection stands in the family tree, but no document supports it. A likeness from her family survives: Conrad Mannlich, 1700 to 1758, painted Colonel Johann Balthasar von Poyda at the age of fifty-two. Whether he was a close relative remains to be settled.
A Prussian family of officers from Rendsburg in Holstein. It becomes tangible in the eighteenth century with Karl Balthasar von Poyda, 1724 to 1791, a lieutenant in the Salemon free battalion. His son Heinrich Konstantin Anton, 1764 to 1834, entered the Berlin cadet house in 1775, fought at the cannonade of Valmy and before Mainz and Landau, received the order Pour le Mérite in 1794 and in 1820 became major general and commander of the eleventh Landwehr brigade. No coat of arms of the family can be found, printed or painted; this page therefore stays without a picture until one turns up.
