Hertha was the daughter of Landrat August von Gerlach of the Parsow-Schwemmin main line. Adolf Friedrich von der Schulenburg held the title of imperial count.
One of the oldest and most distinguished German noble families, documented in the Altmark since 1237 and one of the eight castle-holding noble houses of the region. The family produced field marshals, ministers and diplomats. Its best-known 20th-century member is Count Friedrich-Werner von der Schulenburg (1875–1944), the last German ambassador to Moscow, executed after the 20 July 1944 plot.
