The marriage produced five children, among them Reinold von Thadden (1891–1976), founder of the German Protestant Kirchentag, Elisabeth von Thadden (1890–1944), an educator and resistance fighter executed in 1944 at Plötzensee, and Ehrengard Schramm (1900–1985), a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament, married to the historian Percy Ernst Schramm.
An ancient Pomeranian noble family with the ancestral seat of Trieglaff near Greifenberg. The Thaddens belonged to the theologically conservative Pomeranian nobility; Adolf's grandfather, also named Adolf von Thadden-Trieglaff (1796–1882), founded the Pomeranian revival movement and was a lifelong friend of Ernst Ludwig von Gerlach's. Adolf von Thadden-Trieglaff was Landrat of the Mohrungen and Greifenberg districts and chairman of the Association of Pomeranian Districts.
