Martin came from the marriage of Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold von Gerlach to Marie von Rohr. Klara died on 2 September 1902, not yet thirty; eight years later he married Eva von Tiedemann of Danzig.
A young house, and its rise is a story in itself. Sigmund Otto Joseph von Treskow, 1756 to 1825, traded in Berlin and supplied the armies of the American as well as the French upheaval; Friedrich Wilhelm II raised him to the nobility in 1797. Tradition holds that he received the Regent from the French side, the diamond of a hundred and forty carats, as security for a loan; the stone went back to Napoleon and lies today in the Louvre. The family divided into three branches: Owinsk with great estates in Posen, Friedrichsfelde with the Berlin properties, Dahlwitz, which made its name in racing. The Treskowallee and the Treskow bridge in Berlin carry the name. The arms of 1797 show on silver three black raven heads with gold collars, on the helm a raven head between peacock feathers.
